Heel Fissures

Dry, cracked heels, also known as heel fissures, are a common foot problem resulting in rough, flaky skin on the heels that can lead to painful cracks. This condition often occurs when the skin becomes excessively dry, which can be worsened by cold weather, prolonged standing, or wearing open-back shoes that allow the skin to expand and dry out. People who are more at risk include those with conditions like diabetes, obesity, or eczema, as well as individuals who frequently walk barefoot or have naturally dry skin. Symptoms include rough, thickened skin, itching, and in severe cases, deep cracks that can bleed and become infected. Mild relief can come from regularly moisturizing the feet with thick creams or ointments, using a pumice stone to gently remove dead skin, and wearing supportive shoes that protect the heels. Preventive measures include keeping the feet well-hydrated, avoiding harsh soaps, and wearing socks with closed-back shoes to maintain moisture. If your cracked heels are severe or become infected, it is strongly suggested that you seek care from a podiatrist.

If the skin on your feet starts to crack, you may want to see a podiatrist to find treatment. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists from Arcadia Foot and Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Cracked Heels

It is important to moisturize your cracked heels in order to prevent pain, bleeding, and infection. The reason cracked heels form is because the skin on the foot is too dry to support the immense pressure placed on them. When the foot expands, the dry skin on the foot begins to split.

Ways to Help Heal Them

  • Invest in a good foot cream
  • Try Using Petroleum Jelly
  • Ease up on Soaps
  • Drink Plenty of Water

Ways to Prevent Cracked Heels

  • Moisturize After Showering
  • Skip a Shower
  • Keep Shower Water Lukewarm
  • Don’t Scrub Your Feet

If you are unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels, seek guidance from a podiatrist. Your doctor will help you with any questions or information you may need.

Tips for Finding Shoes That Fit Properly

Choosing shoes that fit well is essential for foot health, as wearing poorly fitting shoes can lead to discomfort and may even cause foot problems. To find the perfect fit, it is best to measure your feet while in a shoe store, ensuring you account for length, width, and arch length. Foot size and shape can change over time due to aging, so relying on old measurements is not recommended. Shopping for shoes later in the day when your feet are naturally swollen helps ensure a better fit. Standing during measurement provides a more accurate size, as weight distribution affects foot shape. It is also important to prioritize fit over size labels, as these can vary between brands. Always try on shoes with the socks or hosiery you intend to wear with them, ensuring enough room for movement in the toe box and a slight space at the heel to prevent blisters. Shoes can help with foot problems, but they can also cause problems if they do not fit well. If you are seeking tips for buyng shoes that fit properly to avoid possible uncomfortable foot conditions,  it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Arcadia Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

Causes of Numbness in the Toes

Experiencing numbness in your toes can be disconcerting, as it often points to underlying health issues. One of the most common causes of numb toes is wearing tight shoes that restrict circulation and compress nerves. Diabetes is another major factor, with high blood sugar levels leading to peripheral neuropathy that decreases sensation in the feet. The buildup of plaque in arteries can result in peripheral artery disease, which causes numbness in the toes from restricted blood flow. Hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland produces insufficient hormones, may lead to fluid retention and nerve damage, affecting the toes. Other causes of numb toes can include bunions, Morton's neuroma, and vitamin B12 deficiency, each affecting the nerves and blood supply to the toes. A podiatrist can help identify the specific cause of numbness through a series of tests. If your toes are frequently numb, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam, diagnosis, and treatment.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with one of our podiatrists from Arcadia Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

Shin Splints and the Feet

Shin splints, medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome, are a common condition resulting in pain along the inner edge of the shinbone, or tibia. This pain typically results from repetitive stress on the shinbone and the connective tissues that attach muscles to the bone from the ankle. Runners, dancers, and athletes who engage in high-impact activities are particularly at risk. The condition often occurs due to overuse, wearing improper footwear, or sudden increases in physical activity. Flat feet or abnormally high arches can worsen shin splints by causing improper alignment and distribution of stress during movement. Treatment for shin splints includes rest and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce pain and swelling. Stretching and strengthening exercises, along with wearing proper footwear, can prevent recurrence. A podiatrist can provide valuable assistance by evaluating your foot biomechanics and recommending custom orthotics to improve alignment and reduce stress on the tibia. If you have shin splints, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with this type of doctor for care.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with one of our podiatrists from Arcadia Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.
